Law Students

Choosing the law firm at which to article is one of the most important decisions a law student will ever make. The choices that we make in selecting our students are no less important to us. Since we hire and develop the best students and lawyers, year after year, we see you as our future. For this reason, we put tremendous resources into our summer and articling programs. Our approach is to hire second-year summer students with the expectation that they will ultimately join us as lawyers.

Pallett Valo provides students with hands-on experience. They are given a high level of responsibility and will often work on a file from start to finish. We ensure that our students gain substantive experience and are given exposure to specialty areas including:

  • Business
  • Commercial Litigation
  • Commercial Real Estate
  • Construction
  • Estate Litigation
  • Insolvency & Corporate Restructuring
  • Insurance Defence Litigation
  • Employment & Labour
  • Wills, Estates & Trusts

In these areas, our students will gain experience:

  • Participating in client meetings
  • Identifying and researching applicable areas of law and legal issues
  • Drafting transactional documents and agreements, and participating in closing of transaction
  • Preparing draft court documents, including claims, affidavits, motion material, settlement agreements and releases
  • Managing and reviewing document disclosure
  • Attending court proceedings and examinations with senior counsel
  • Managing small claims court files and attending court
  • Preparing for and participating in mediations, arbitrations and settlement meetings

Each articling student is assigned to one of our associate lawyers who acts as an advisor and sounding board. The program creates the opportunity for the student and the mentor to meet regularly to discuss progress to date. We consider this program to be an important factor in assisting with a student’s career development.

We encourage our students to be involved with the firm in attending lunch and learn sessions, summer and holiday events, monthly lawyers’ social get-togethers and other events. The firm provides students with a collegial atmosphere which encourages openness and collaboration.

“Pallett Valo provides a unique environment to learn as a summer and articling student.  As a summer student, I enjoyed working with a variety of lawyers, gaining exposure in all areas of law offered by the firm.  Because of Pallett Valo’s medium size, students are given a good deal of responsibility, and there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing the value of your work as it affects the outcome of a matter.  As a corporate articling student, I assist with the closing of large business transactions, draft contracts and other corporate documents, provide legal opinions, and interact directly with clients, all while learning the ins-and-outs of corporate law.  Everyone at the firm is professional, friendly, and supportive, making Pallett Valo an ideal environment to learn and grow.  I truly believe that articling at Pallet Valo is the best launch pad off which to pursue a successful career in law. ”

“As a summer student, I truly enjoyed my experience at Pallett Valo. The friendly and professional environment of the firm combined with the high quality of work that I was assigned made the experience very rewarding. Because of the size of the firm, I was often able to work directly with partners and senior associates, which accelerated the pace of my learning. Every single person that I worked with was willing to take the time to explain things and provide me with valuable feedback. I am very excited to be returning to Pallett Valo as an articling student.”

“I had the opportunity to both summer and article with Pallett Valo.  The summer student program provided a snapshot of what the practice of law is all about.  Returning to complete my articles with Pallett Valo provided me with a fulsome experience where I gained practical, hands-on experience in various legal areas.  The firm provides an immense amount of support and resources which ultimately guided me in choosing to become a litigator.  I was given the autonomy to draft pleadings, take carriage of Small Claims Court matters and come up with tactical solutions for enforcing judgments.  The complexity of the work coupled with the outstanding lawyers practicing and Pallett Valo was an incredibly rewarding experience.”

“My summer and articling experiences confirmed that Pallett Valo was the right choice for me. The small number of students and the flexibility of the program allow both the summer and articling experiences to be personalized to the student’s interest. The mid-size nature of the firm also means that students are involved in big files and are assigned work that makes you feel like you are making an important contribution. The firm is committed to offering students an invaluable learning experience and preparing them for the practice of law. The atmosphere at Pallett Valo is friendly and collegial and students are always included in the professional and social events. Given my experience across a wide range of practice areas and the knowledgeable and friendly lawyers and staff, I am proud to have started my legal career at Pallett Valo”

“Pallett Valo emphasizes the development of its students through practical experience and an exposure to a wide array of practice areas. During my articling experience, I worked closely with lawyers on closing multi-million dollar business transactions, drafting contracts, preparing for trials and providing legal advice to clients. The supportive and professional culture encourages students to explore areas of interest while receiving regular guidance from the firm’s lawyers throughout the learning process.”

“My summer and articling experiences at Pallett Valo were strong training grounds for the practice of law. I was given opportunities to explore my interests in all areas of the firm and learned valuable skills that I will continue to apply in my own practice. I had a high degree of responsibility on all files and while I was encouraged to learn independently, the lawyers were more than willing to address my questions and offer practical advice. Even though the firm holds high expectations for its students, its mid-sized nature cultivates a relaxed environment and strikes the perfect balance between professionalism and collegiality. It is a pleasure coming to work every day and makes being a lawyer that much more rewarding.”
