Joe Conte

A master at strategy and planning with tremendous business acumen and instincts.

As an experienced business law generalist with particular expertise in secured lending and finance, Joe Conte represents banks and other commercial lenders, owner-managed businesses, public companies and multinational corporations.

Drawing on his experience in private practice and as in-house counsel to several multinationals, Joe has developed an in-depth understanding of general corporate and commercial law, including contract negotiation and review, intellectual property licensing, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, privacy law, and the purchase and sale of businesses. He has also implemented numerous tax-driven and complex corporate reorganizations.

Having a thorough grasp of commercial objectives, he offers solutions focused on delivering value and quality, often cutting through red tape to resolve negotiation disputes speedily. His impressive ability to wade through complex business situations makes him stand out at the top of his profession.

Challenging conventional approaches, Joe aims to provide different perspectives to problems to achieve the best outcomes. Such as applying the PPSA in non-finance fields to secure performance obligations.

As lead counsel, Joe has acted for a major motor sports manufacturer in acquiring a C$175 million commercial loan portfolio, and subsequently establishing a retail finance business across Canada. He has also acted for management stakeholders in a C$18 million sale of a services business to a public company.

Joe has significant expertise in secured transactions and regularly advises Canadian and U.S. lenders on loan and security matters. He also assists foreign companies in establishing a Canadian presence and business operations, and routinely advises on privacy law, anti-spam and related matters, as well as technology transfer arrangements.

Joe also sits on the firm’s Executive Committee.
